Can Lance Do It? Lance Armstrong is going to try and make history yet again by coming out of retirement and going for his eighth Tour de France title next July. He's been retired for three years. After racing the Leadville 100 in Colorado in August, he got the itch to start competitive cycling again. (I hope he remembers the difference between quiet Leadville and the Tour!) He's said he wants to prove he's clean and is glad that the new tests are more stringent than ever. He wants to be more open with French journalists and more transparent about his activities leading up to the Tour 2009. In a long interview with Vanity Fair he explained his reasoning and what he hopes to accomplish. It remains to be seen if ASO will "invite" him and the Astana team next summer. But after three pretty dismal years at the Tour, this should be welcome and a good boost to the race. Lance will be 37 next summer so it will be interesting to see if he can beat someone like Contador, who is still in his twenties and on the same team. In any case, whether he wins or not, it will be a shot in the arm for professional cycling and all the fans.

August 9, 2008 Leadville, Colorado 2008 Leadville 100 MTB Mountain Bike Race
Lance Armstrong at start in Leadville 100 It was an exciting race. Over 1000 cyclists started the race at 6:30 am in "downtown" Leadville. It was barely dawn when they headed out. We first caught them near the top of Hagerman Road where they exited the trail to cross a road. Lance Armstrong was with a small group that came through first and included Dave Weins. Lance looked serious. There were rumors that he'd been training around Aspen the past couple of weeks and had ridden the course several times in training.

Stage 20: Cerilly - Saint Amand Montrond TT It was a really long day today and the course was pretty flat and backlit. Stefan Schumacher won the stage, with Cancellara coming in second and Kirchen finishing third. Carlos Sastre finished in 12th place which was enough to keep the yellow jersey into Paris tomorrow. Cadel Evans made up enough time to snag second place, and third place will be Bernard Kohl. Christian Vandevelde made up a minute and a half but he's in fifth place, so no Americans will be on the podium this year. It's been a long time since we haven't had a spot there for anything. Tonight is a long drive back to Paris, though not quite as bad as it sometimes is after this last time trial.
