Marianne Vos has won the second stage of La Vuelta Femenina. The 37-year-old rider from Team Visma | Lease a Bike was perfectly dropped by her teammates in the final kilometers and then finished it off expertly. Because of her victory, Vos will start tomorrow in the green points jersey.
“I am happy that I was able to crown the team’s work with the victory,” Vos stammered afterwards. “Of course we prepared for a bunch sprint, but we also knew we had to stay alert. The girls kept me out of trouble all day and made sure I went into the last corner first. I’m very grateful to them for that.”
In the first stage-in-line, the riders were presented with a course of nearly one hundred kilometers. Halfway through the stage it started to rain heavily and the roads became slippery. Team Visma | Lease a Bike stayed together and made sure that leading riders Vos and Pauline Ferrand-Prévot stayed out of trouble.
Ferrand-Prévot and Imogen Wolff brought Vos to the finish line in a seat. The multiple world champion appreciated the work of her team and took her first victory of the season. For Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women, it was the fourth victory of this calendar year.
“After everything that happened yesterday, we said to each other that we would save all the energy for today. It was nice to see that everyone committed to it,” Vos continued. “We will go into the next stages with a lot of motivation and a good atmosphere. We are going to do everything we can to keep this momentum.”
