Copied from his Facebook Post:
“Many of you have noticed a prolonged absence of my paintings and postings here on Facebook.
Last June, after months of a persistent sore throat, I was diagnosed with Hypopharyngeal cancer. Beginning in July and lasting through December, I underwent a course of treatment which included chemo, radiation and immunotherapy. We thought we had it beat, as the tumor seemed to have disappeared, but the cancer soon reappeared in a new spot in my throat. Logically, and from a medical standpoint, the next step was to have a total laryngectomy which I underwent on March 12th. I’m happy to say the ten hour surgery was successful and it appears all the cancer has been excised.
I am now at home from the Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven which is where I received my initial treatment and the subsequent surgery. What this means is that I currently have lost my ability to speak. However, during the reconstructive part of the surgery, a prosthetic voicebox was implanted, and with practice and good luck I should be able to speak again, just not with my original voice.
My outlook remains positive and I’m optimistic about further recovery as I work with the speech and language therapists and begin this new phase in my life.
Your friend,
Andy”

And from his wife Daria
“Dear friends, family, the cycling & nordic skiing communities, this is just a very brief note to let you know that Andy Bishop reached the finish line peacefully early Tuesday morning at the Jack Byrne Center in New Hampshire. He was surrounded by the love of close family in his last days, sleeping in the sunshine, watching (listening to) Star Wars & La La Land & listening to old jazz.
We are all so heartbroken about a vibrant life ending much too soon.
An obituary with details and plans for a celebration of life are in the works.
In the meantime, go enjoy the outdoors, pause to admire a pretty flower & eat a Vermont maple creemee in his honor. “
