Announcing the Tadej Pogačar Cancer Research Foundation

Establishing a Foundation for Cancer Research

Back in yellow jersey to La Super Planche des Belles Filles in the steep hill that brought me my first victory in the 2020 Tour de France

On today’s stage 7, with the final climb up the iconic and historic La Super Planche des Belles Filles – the steep hill that brought me my first victory in the Tour de France less than two years ago – I wore unique cycling shoes by DMT for a special reason. The neutral-coloured ribbon on the colorful checkered palette symbolizes all types of cancers, which the newly established Tadej Pogačar Cancer Research Foundation will work to fund further research to reduce and eventually cure cancers in the future.

The Foundation was initiated by my personal trainer, Dr Iñigo San-Millán, with whom I proudly announce the creation of the Foundation, which will be dedicated to raising funds for cancer research and to expanding basic research in the fields of cancer metabolism and exercise oncology. The field of exercise oncology is gaining popularity due to the potential beneficial effects of physical activity on cancer prevention, treatment and prognosis. A better understanding of the benefits of exercise needs more research to individualize exercise prescription for cancer patients and survivors.

Dr. San-Millán has decades of work with professional athletes on exercise metabolism and cancer metabolism, and advocates a paradigm shift in cancer research. His work focuses on cancer function at the cellular level, comparing fully and incompletely functioning mitochondria and cellular function, while working to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for the general population.

I want the Foundation to succeed in its core mission and I will work hard to ensure that it achieves its desired goals.
