Sir Wiggins raising the voice in TTT Trentino

Team Sky express train on schedule

Sir Bradley Wiggins does not speak to much, but he sure knows how to make a point. Team Sky’s train arrived perfectly on time at the Team Time Trial, closing the first day of an exciting Giro del Trentino, where a lot of things already happened in a matter of a few hours. In the morning, the surprise breakaway by 8 outsiders gave French Maxime Bouet the stage win and the first leader’s jersey, leaving a 7 minute burden on the favorites’ shoulders.

In the afternoon, a highly-anticipated team time trial, particularly important for the teams in the setup for the Giro d’Italia, saw the major team somehow manage to get their grip back on the race. Team Sky delivered a strongly-prediced win, ahead of Astana and Lampre. That means Bradley Wiggins earned 12 seconds on Nibali, 16 on Scarponi, 44 on Pellizotti, 49 on both Basso and Evans. “But the most important thing – commented Wiggins – is that I had good feelings. I feel ok and confident. Tomorrow’s test to Vetriolo will be really tough, but we are here to see where we can get, hopefully as high as possible.”

Dario Cataldo, who seems to be always enjoying a lucky time when it comes to Trentino. “It was a good performance and a significant test for mechanics. About the morning half-stage – the Italian added – it was not our responsibility to take control of the race, but that doesn’t mean we are here just for training. Our team time trial shows just that. “

Josef Cerny, Czech CCC Polsat rider took over the leader’s jersey from Bouet. Now, the question is whether today’s morning escapees can hold on till Friday. The extremely demanding route (notably Vetriolo and Sega di Ala uphill finish) might mar their chances, but one way or another, that will add some further thrill and interest to the next, spectacular three days.

Tomorrow the race heads back to Italy: 224,8 km from Sillian to Vetriolo Terme, with the Passo Lavazè to be climbed on the the final ascent. Look out for big gaps and, possibly, another change in leadership – Colombian Rodriguez looks in a strong position.
