Elia Viviani bids farewell to cycling at Six Days of Ghent

Elia Viviani officially completed the final laps of his professional career today at the Six Days of Ghent. In front of a packed Kuipke, he received a standing ovation from the entire crowd as he entered the track for the last time. “This is the perfect ending.”

The atmosphere inside ’t Kuipke was filled with emotions as fans, fellow riders, and staff gathered to honour the legacy that Viviani leaves behind. Taking his time to reflect, Viviani expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his journey: “I want to thank my team, Lotto Cycling Team, for their support and for giving me this opportunity. Also a big thanks to my staff, my family, my friends and fans. Since my first race they have been with me. I would also like to thank all my competitors for a great battle on the roads and on the track in the past years and to make me push my limits.”

Viviani’s farewell was the result of a thoughtfully crafted plan: “It’s been an amazing 16 years, on the road and on the track. I got to celebrate many victories. This is really the way I wanted to say goodbye. It was the perfect ending. When I decided to do it, I was thinking how it would be the best way. From the last raceday on the road in my hometown in Veneto, with all my close family and friends. Then the World Championships ending with the rainbow jersey. This is something you dream of, until it becomes reality. I spent most of my career in Belgium, with a Belgian team. So I really wanted to give something back. This last dance is for them.”
