The 31-year-old Dutch champion powered to a convincing win after already finishing in third and second place on the first two bunch sprints finishes of the Hungarian race.
Team Jayco AlUla displayed their great determination and hunger on the 153.6km penultimate stage, with the day’s course relatively flat with the Nadap climb (2.2km at 5.6%) in the first half of the race as the main obstacle. Six riders signed for the break of the day, but very little space was given to the leaders as Team Jayco AlUla, along with other sprint teams, led the chase and the gap remained limited.
With 30 kilometres to go, the leaders were finally caught and the chances of a third bunch sprint finish increased. However, due to the wind and the chance of echelons, nervousness was felt in the peloton.
Team Jayco AlUla kept Groenewegen in a good position at the front of the bunch all the time before leading the multiple Tour de France stage winner perfectly into the final kilometres.
Groenewegen then showed his great sprinting instinct and blasted to the line in a convincing way to deliver the team a much-deserved win.
Dylan Groenewegen
“Twice already I was very close to victory in this race, but each time someone was just slightly faster than me. That was frustrating, especially as the team did a fantastic job for me in both stages. Today, however, everything fell into place. The team performed very well again, although we lost each other in the hectic final kilometre. Fortunately, I was still able to get out of the hustle to take the win after finishing third and second before. This victory is a relief for me and confirms that all the hard work of recent weeks has not been in vain.”
Tristan Hoffman (Sport director)
“Our guys did a fantastic job today. There was a breakaway and at the right moments we boosted the pace in the peloton. Towards the end there was some crosswind, but there wasn’t much happening. Nevertheless, as a team we were very good at the front at that point. In the deep final, Dylan was a bit further back, which was also the plan because of the wind. The team gave everything to put Dylan in a good position. And Dylan in turn showed his class with the way he came out of the hustle and sprinted to victory.”
