Casper Van Uden Delivers Landmark Giro d’Italia Victory

Casper Van Uden (Team Picnic PostNL) has won Stage 4 of the 108th Giro d’Italia, the 189km long Alberobello (Pietramadre)-Lecce, ahead of Olav Kooij (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Maikel Zijlaard (Tudor Pro Cycling Team).

It was the first stage in Italy and a surprise win for the Dutchman Casper Van Uden, a 23-year-old, in his third season as a professional. It was a frantic sprint, with great tension in the 24 km of the Lecce circuit. He launched himself into the sprint that left no room for his rivals.

Celebrations came early for Ursus at this year’s Giro d’Italia. Just four stages into the brand’s first Corsa Rosa alongside Team Picnic-PostNL, the PROXIMA Team Edition wheels powered Casper Van Uden to a thrilling sprint victory in Lecce, edging out fellow Dutch riders Olav Kooij and Maikal Zijlaard in stage four (Alberobello – Lecce) on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

For the 23-year-old Van Uden, this breakthrough victory firmly establishes his credentials as one of cycling’s brightest young sprinters. This feat also represents the first-ever Giro d’Italia stage win for both Van Uden and the Ursus PROXIMA Team Edition wheels. It’s the third victory of the season for the collaboration between Ursus and Picnic-PostNL, and certainly the most prestigious for the Italian brand, on the road of its home Grand Tour.

“This win means a great deal to us,” commented Ursus CEO Mirko Ferronato. “We’ve celebrated Giro victories before, but achieving this alongside a World Tour team like Team Picnic-PostNL makes it genuinely special. It’s a fantastic milestone for Ursus and hopefully sets the tone for more successes in the days ahead.”

CASPER VAN UDEN’S CHOICE

Ursus engineered the PROXIMA Team Edition wheels specifically to deliver an optimal balance of weight, responsiveness, and reliability—crucial attributes at cycling’s elite level. These qualities were instrumental in the demanding technical finale in Lecce, characterized by tight curves and frequent accelerations.

To enhance his acceleration and aerodynamic efficiency in the final sprint, Casper Van Uden selected the PROXIMA Team Edition wheels with a 60mm rim profile. The wheel range is also available in 35mm, 40mm, and 50mm options.

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) retains the Maglia Rosa with 7 seconds over Roglic despite having fallen twice.

Tomorrow is the fifth stage, from Ceglie Messapica to Matera, 151 kilometers long: space for finishers on the final steep climb.
