Boulder Indoor Cycling

The Boulder Indoor Cycling venue is quickly becoming the place to be for cycling enthusiasts from near and far.  It’s a really cool place housing a 142-meter indoor wooden track with 45-degree corners and 16-degree straights.  In case you’re not going fast enough on the track you can have a pick-me-up on the upper viewing deck with a coffee from Vic’s Espresso or an athlete-appropriate snack.  You can even buy a Fuji bike or pick up some bike accessories.  And they have free track bikes for rent with a paid class, training session or league.

The brainstorm for the indoor Boulder velodrome came from Paul Wells, a former mountain bike racer, and one of his partners, Rodrigo Garcia, who saw the indoor mountain bike park in Cleveland and loved the idea.  They already were running Boulder Indoor Soccer.  They’re open to the idea of selling franchises in other parts of the country.Paul Wells Cyclist on track Cyclist racing intervals

They’re constructing a mountain bike track that will be in the interior of the main track. Boulder Indoor Mountain Bike Track

There are currently about 700 members, not including all the kids.  It’s a $25 annual membership for adults and there are options for kids, masters, elite, and recreational leagues.  Most of the cyclists are recreational cyclists.  And unlike the Olympic velodrome in Colorado Springs one doesn’t need to have a USA sanctioned license to ride, just a safety course, since track bikes have no brakes.

They’d like to host some events, possibly a 6-Day, similar to the legendary European races, as well as some exhibition events and cycle watch parties. They’re expecting to be the site sometime this fall for filming of a new movie about Major Taylor.

Boulder Indoor Cycling is becoming a cycling cultural gathering place.  I ran into someone I hadn’t seen since the Celestial Seasonings/La Vie Claire days of the 1985-1986 Coors Classics.
