Key points:
The Amazon Armed Forces Cycling Classic, supported by A.S.O. in its efforts to expand its international reach, is set to take a significant step forward in 2027, with its flagship race, the Capitol Cup, joining the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) calendar as a Category 1.2 event.
The next edition of this weekend of cycling events will take place in Washington on June 5 and 6, 2027.
The Amazon Armed Forces Cycling Classic, a major fixture on the American racing calendar for more than 25 years, has announced that its flagship Saturday race has been granted UCI Category 1.2 road race status and will join the international road calendar for the 2027 season. This development will also see the race move to a longer circuit: the 20-kilometre course currently used by participants in the Challenge Ride, a non-competitive cycling event.
This UCI recognition places the race alongside other American events on the international calendar, including the Philly Cycling Classic and the Tour of the Gila. Organisers expect this new status to attract more UCI-registered teams from around the world, offering spectators a larger and more competitive field. The decision to opt for Category 1.2 was made to ensure that the event can continue to welcome many of the highly competitive American domestic elite teams that race almost exclusively in the United States.
Robert Laybourn, President of Arlington Sports, Inc. and Race Director:
“This development reflects the vision we share with our partner Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) for the future of the event. Every major decision we make is guided by documented metrics and data. The event will continue to evolve and improve as our budget and other constraints allow, prioritising changes that have demonstrated their value in supporting its growth, success and long-term sustainability.”
Yann Le Moënner, CEO of Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.):
“Our commitment to supporting the Amazon Armed Forces Cycling Classic is part of a broader resurgence of road cycling in the United States, opening up exciting new opportunities. The Capitol Cup’s move up the ranks of international cycling marks an important milestone that should further enhance its appeal. The stars also seem to be perfectly aligned, with an American rider, Brandon McNulty, currently wearing the rainbow jersey.”
