2009 Paris Nice Stage 7

Stage 7 Manosque – Fayence

Bad day for Contador.  Everything began to fall apart today for Alberto Contador on the Col de Bourigaille about 30 k from the finish.  Contador was in a break with Sanchez and Colom.  About 2 k from the top, they were joined by Schleck, Voight, and Chavanel.  Then 15 k from the finish, Sanchez escaped.  About 4 k from the finish when it looked like the yellow jersey was going to change, Colom picked up the pace.  Everyone but Contador reacted; he was spent.  He ended up being caught and passed by the peloton and finished 1’50” behind Sanchez who now has the yellow jersey.

This is said to be an incredibly difficult Paris-Nice, with so much climbing.  Alberto showed that he’s not Superman, and it will be interesting to see what happens in the Tour de France.

Tomorrow is the last stage, but there are 3 Cat 1 climbs, so it most certainly won’t be a parade into Nice.  It could all change yet again.
